THINGS THAT TAKE US AWAY There are things in this life that are not evil within themselves, but become evil because they take us away from God. Any thing that takes over our lives and leads us from God is sinful.
In Matt. 5:29-30, Jesus taught that even a hand or an eye should be removed from our body if either should cause us to sin. His illustration was that even things near and dear to us cannot interfere with our faithful worship and service to God.
Therefore, our jobs, our hobbies, recreation and even our families (as important as these are) could take us away from God, and thus cause us to lose our soul.
True, sometimes our job schedule requires us to work when regularly scheduled worship services of the church are in progress. We have the obligation to our employer to do what we are employed to do, but what is our attitude? Had we rather be at work than at worship?
Dear Aunt Susie come for a visit. Do we stay home and fix Sunday dinner for her or do we invite her to worship with us?
Sports activities – hunting, fishing, ball games, etc., are things that certainly can draw us away from God. Is it our attitude that these things only happen occasionally and we can go to worship and Bible Study anytime? Which is more important, winning a ballgame or gaining eternal life?
Jesus said, “But seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God…
