DRESSING FOR WORSHIP 09/17/00 Past/Future Articles |

Psychologists have known for a long time that dress does have an influence on behavior. Slouchy dress creates slouchy work in school. This has led some high schools, colleges, universities and even work places to insist that their students, employees dress as though they were serious about their work. This is not saying that every man should wear a white shirt and tie, but the importance of worship should cause every person to want to give some special attention to his or her appearance.
Make no mistake about it: shorts, tank-tops, T-shirts advertising beer or beer taverns, and rock groups send a message about the wearer. Most respectable places have a sign, “NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE”. Are we as a church approaching the day when such signs would be appropriate for the house of worship?
As we are told, “Let all things be done decently and in order,” (I Cor. 14:40). This should apply also to us as Christians in the appearance of our dress.
